If you’ve ever Googled “what does a birth doula do,” you’ve probably found a mix of hip squeezes, twinkle lights, and someone whispering affirmations. And hey, if that’s your vibe, I’m here for it! But let’s be real – a birth doula doesn’t have to be a walking essential oil diffuser! (But to be fair, I love me some essential oils and twinkle lights!)
Hi, I’m Kylie. I’m a birth photographer and certified doula based in Northern Colorado, and my version of birth support looks more like a chaos-taming, hydration-reminding, emotionally-grounding bestie who also happens to have a camera in hand.

Here’s what I actually do as your birth doula (and what I don’t):
1. I offer steady, grounded support from pregnancy through postpartum.
You get two prenatal meetings where we prep your birth plan, talk about preferences, and make sure you have resources (like classes and local pros) at your fingertips. Then I’m on-call starting at 38 weeks, ready to roll whenever baby says go. I’ll also meet with you in the first few weeks after baby is born to talk through your birth, check in on your mental health, and get you any resources you might need!
2. I’m not just there for labor—I’m there for YOU.
Your birth isn’t a performance. It’s real and raw and personal and you get through it in whatever way you need to! I’m there to normalize the process, keep the vibe calm, offer reassurance, and remind you that you’re doing an incredible job. I’ll hold your hand – I’ll rub your back – I’ll say, “this is normal” about 47 times because sometimes you need to hear it 47 times.
3. I don’t take over the room—I support the energy.
I’m definitely not directing your birth or telling your provider what to do. I’m there to make sure you feel heard, supported, and safe. And I work right alongside your partner to help them support you better, not replace them.
4. I’m a photographer first—but a doula, always.
When you hire me for both birth photography and doula support, you get someone who knows when to put the camera down and offer hands-on help. It’s never just about getting the shot—it’s about being present for you first, and then capturing the real, beautiful moments as they unfold.
5. I’m not “woo,” but I respect your woo.
I’m a practical kind of doula. Think: back rubs, water, hair ties, and calm energy. If you want affirmations, I’ll say them. If you want silence, I’ll shut up. If you want a playlist and mood lighting, I’ll make it happen. My job is to support you in the way you want to be supported!
Do I Really Need a Doula and a Photographer?
It depends! If you want support and documentation, hiring someone who does both (like me!) can make things super simple. You don’t have to juggle two separate people, and you get someone who knows your story inside and out. If you already have a doula, awesome—I can come in as your photographer and work seamlessly with them, too.

Let’s Recap:
A birth doula is:
- A calm, steady presence who reminds you that you’ve got this
- A support person for your whole family, not just you
- A logistics helper, space-holder, hand-squeezer, and essential-oil-bringer
- NOT a medical provider, bossy birth lady, or someone who judges your choices
