If you’re a new parent, you’re probably overwhelmed with all the decisions you need to make. Everywhere you look there’s a “must have newborn essentials” guide of a gazillion things you should buy or do before baby arrives. It’s exhausting!
Choosing a newborn photographer doesn’t have to add to the overwhelm! Let me guide you through the process and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby’s life.

Now, let’s delve into some of the most common questions about newborn photography.

“What style of photographer am I looking for?”

It’s important to choose a photographer who specializes in the type of newborn photography you are looking for, and has experience working with infants. There are two basic styles of newborn photos – posed and lifestyle or baby-led.

The posed style usually involves going to a studio or having a mini studio brought to your house. Posed newborn photographers prefer to work with babies that are less than two weeks old, and the sessions usually last upwards of two hours. These are the photos that you see with the baby wrapped beautifully in adorable props, or resting their squishy little faces on their hands. There is usually a lot of photoshopping involved to merge images to safely produce some of the more involved poses (so don’t try them at home!)

The lifestyle or baby-led style, which is what I specialize in, doesn’t involve any props or studios. Your baby mostly stays right in your arms where they most want to be. Baby can be really any age, but within those first 6 weeks is ideal. My sessions last about an hour, sometimes slightly longer if baby needs more time to nurse or poop or whatever they need to do. I do my best to make it as stress free as possible – just like a friend coming over to oogle over your adorable new baby!

“When should I book my newborn photography session?”

It is helpful to book your newborn session in your third trimester. When you book with me, I add your due date to my calendar, and then when baby is born you just need to reach out to let me know, and we pick a date for your session. I don’t stress over your baby’s age for lifestyle photos. We can schedule asap or a few weeks out, depending on how everyone is feeling. If you choose a posed photographer, it’s even more important to let them know when baby is here so they can get you in within those first 14 days.

“Do you bring anything? Do I need to have anything available?”

I don’t usually bring anything except my camera! Occasionally I’ll bring a few extras like a swaddle, but for the most part I want your photos to feature your things. It’s a lot more meaningful that way. I do ask that you have a swaddle blanket available, and if you’d like anything specific in the photos (like the blanket grandma knitted for the baby, or a sign with the baby’s birth stats or something along those lines) I am happy to accommodate those!

If you hire a posed photographer that brings the studio to your home, they will provide all of the swaddles and props you need!

“When will I get my photos?”

This varies from photographer to photographer and is definitely something you should ask when you are doing your research. My clients can expect to receive the final edited photos within 2-3 weeks, which I feel is pretty standard in most cases.

“How much does newborn photography cost?”

This also varies WIDELY between photographers! My word of advice on this one, as a MOM, is that you want to make sure that the person that will likely be handling your brand new baby is experienced. This is one of those things in life that I truly believe you get what you pay for. Part of what you are paying for is the safe handling of your newborn! And the other part is the talent and expertise of your photographer.

You can expect to pay between $400-$1000+ for newborn photos in the Denver Metro areas. I know this might seem like a significant investment, but newborn photography is a specialized service. It requires a lot of time, effort, and knowledge. I personally offer payment plans because I want to make it available to everyone that wants it!

So, there you have it! Newborn photography is a wonderful way to capture the early moments of your baby’s life. All you have to do is let me show up! I do my best to take care of all the details.
