Meet Dr. Anna Towne: NoCo Physical Therapist Helping Moms Stay Strong Through Pregnancy & Postpartum

Meet Dr. Anna Towne: NoCo Physical Therapist Helping Moms Feel Strong Again

If you’re an expecting or new mom looking for a NoCo physical therapist who truly gets it, you need to meet Dr. Anna Towne of Strong Core Mama PT! With a background in sports medicine and orthopedic physical therapy, Anna never imagined she’d end up working in the pregnancy and postpartum world —until she experienced it firsthand.

“I really loved my job as a sports medicine/orthopedic physical therapist and never saw myself doing anything else,” Anna shares. “Then I got pregnant with my first and realized there was a huge need for moms to have access to physical therapy during pregnancy and after! I wanted to be able to answer my own questions in pregnancy.”

A Personal Journey

Anna’s own experiences with pregnancy, birth, and postpartum completely changed her career path.

“I had a very painful first pregnancy, which made me want to figure out how to eliminate it as a physical therapist,” she explains. “My second and third pregnancies have been pain-free because of the exercises and changes I’ve been able to incorporate!”

And when it comes to recovery after birth, Anna understands the challenges many of us moms face.

“I ended up having an emergency C-section with my first and a traumatic C-section with my second, so I really feel passionate about working with moms who have had difficult birth stories.”

I had the absolute honor of photographing the belly birth of Anna’s third baby, a surprise gender baby BOY after two girls! It was one of the most joyful belly births I’ve ever witnessed. The entire room was full of love and support, and everyone was smiling—Anna’s birth team was really incredible. Her doula, Jodia Peters, was absolutely fantastic to work with, too. Fun fact—Jodia is now a home birth midwife in NoCo! (You can read more about her work here).

“Strong Core Mama & Strong Running Mama can be done at any time in the motherhood journey,” Anna shares. “The earliest you can start is 6 weeks for Strong Core Mama, 12 weeks for Strong Running Mama, but I always tell moms that it’s NEVER too late to make changes! I have moms come back and do these programs even in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.”

Busting Myths About Pelvic Floor PT

One of the biggest misconceptions Anna wants to clear up? Pelvic floor therapy isn’t weird!

“They are muscles in the body just like anywhere else in the body,” she explains. “They relax and contract. And they can learn how to work properly again with the right exercises and instruction!”

Anna’s Top Tips for Pregnancy & Postpartum

💡 “Don’t accept that pregnancy has to be painful!” You don’t have to suffer through back pain, pelvic pain, or discomfort—there are solutions!

💡 “Don’t accept leaking or pain as your new normal post-baby!” Peeing when you sneeze, run, or laugh is common, but not normal. You can fix it with the right support!

💡 Be mindful of where you get your information. “I recommend moms pay attention to who they’re getting their advice and exercises from! Make sure it’s a Pelvic Floor PT.”
