When I found out I was having twins, I just knew we’d probably be incorporating the NICU in our birth story—and we did. What I didn’t expect was how grateful I’d feel for that experience.

The twins weren’t the only one of my NICU birth stories; my 3rd daughter was also a NICU baby. Her NICU stay was short, but it was hard for me emotionally. At the time, it felt overwhelming and scary—honestly, it took me a long time to process. Looking back, it wasn’t all that long or complicated, but at the time it was a lot.

So going into my twin pregnancy, I carried that experience with me. And when our twins did need NICU care, I was surprised to feel thankful. NICU nurses helped us figure out how to feed two babies, they gave us so much extra support and encouragement, and having their expert hands there during those first three weeks made all the difference. I truly don’t know how we would’ve done it without them.

As a someone who has lived the NICU life, I want to tell you something really important: if your baby (or babies) spend time in the NICU, that part of their story matters just as much as the moment they were born. It’s worth remembering. It’s worth documenting.

You Deserve to Remember Your NICU Birth Story, Too

If your baby (or babies) need time in the NICU, I want you to know: I can document that part of your story, too.

Whether it’s capturing your baby’s transfer right after birth or doing your Fresh 48 session in the NICU instead of a postpartum room, I’ll work with your care team to make sure everything is respectful, gentle, and non-intrusive.

NICU birth stories are powerful. They are full of strength, quiet victories, and deep connection—and those moments are worth preserving just as much as the big birth-day moments.

How to Capture Your NICU Moments on Your Own

Even if you’re not planning a professional session, there’s so much you can do with just your phone to help remember this time. Here are a few of my favorite tips:

📱 Bring a Charger + Free Up Space

Seriously—clear out your camera roll ahead of time! You’ll take more photos than you think, and you’ll be so glad you did.

🐣 Snap the Little Details

Hospital bracelets. Isolette name tags. Tiny toes and wrinkly fingers. The first time they grip your hand. These little moments are so easy to miss in the moment, but they’re so worth remembering later.

✨ Ask Your Nurses

NICU nurses are the actual best. If you want a photo of your first family snuggle, or your baby resting on your chest, they are usually more than happy to snap a quick pic. Don’t be afraid to ask—they know how much these moments mean.

🎥 Take Short Video Clips

There’s something about remembering the sounds of the NICU—the gentle beeps, the hushed voices, the soft breathing of your baby on your chest. A few 10-second videos can transport you right back to those moments. Don’t worry about making them fancy. Just capture what’s real.

However you choose to document your NICU journey—whether it’s a phone pic, a short video, or a full Fresh 48 session—just know this: these moments matter. They’re raw and real and full of strength. You and your baby (or babies!) are doing something extraordinary. And one day, when the wires and beeps and bassinets are long gone, you’ll be so grateful you took the time to remember it all.

Thinking ahead to birth or newborn photography and want someone who gets it—NICU, twins, and all? I’d love to chat. 💛
