I want to introduce you all to Laura of Lulu’s! Laura is a jack of all birthy trades with her background as a labor and delivery nurse, and she is definitely someone you would be thankful to have on your team!
“Hi, I’m Laura! I’m a Registered Nurse, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Educator, and Birth/Postpartum Doula. My business is called Lulu’s—it’s what my six nieces and nephews call me! I’m based in Longmont, Colorado, but I work with families locally and virtually, supporting clients all across the country. I’ve got families in Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and California right now!”
From Labor and Delivery Nurse to Doula: Laura’s Journey
“I’ve been a nurse for 13 years,” Laura explains, “but recently, I’ve shifted my focus to education and lactation doula work.” Her experience as a labor and delivery nurse helped shape the path to where she is now.
“The best part of being an L&D nurse was the time I got to spend with families—getting to know them, guiding them through each decision, and providing evidence-based information so they could make the best choices for themselves,” she shares. “I encouraged their intuition, supported them emotionally and physically, and helped plan the type of birth they envisioned. Patients would tell me, ‘Laura, we were so lucky you were our nurse.’ I didn’t want it to be luck anymore.”
As a doula, Laura builds on her nursing experience. “Now, I can provide that same support, but on an elevated level, over nine or ten months. It’s about making sure families feel safe, empowered, and in the driver’s seat during one of the most important times of their lives.”
What Sets Laura Apart
Laura brings a wealth of experience to her clients. “I’ve worked in big trauma centers, small rural hospitals, OB offices, and even privately in people’s homes,” she says.
“I’ve seen how amazing and physiological birth can be when it’s allowed to unfold naturally, and I’ve also been grateful for medical interventions when they’re needed. Knowing the difference is key. No matter what twists and turns a birth takes, the right support can make all the difference.”
How Laura Works with Families
When you work with Laura, it’s all about you and your vision for your birth. “I love getting to know my clients,” she says. “I specialize in helping families navigate low- or no-intervention births in the hospital setting.”
She provides education on how to communicate with hospital staff and work with your team to stay in the center of your birth experience. “We talk about what you can control in the labor room, how to move with your baby to help labor progress, and coping strategies—both with and without medication.”
As an IBCLC, Laura also provides extensive postpartum support. “We’ll prep for those first weeks home with your baby, covering everything from breastfeeding to bottle-feeding, formula, pumping, and more. I also screen for postpartum concerns and offer guidance on sleep, recovery, and building a strong postpartum support system.”
A Birth Plan that Honors Your Story
For Laura, creating a birth plan starts with understanding each family’s story. “Everyone’s journey to parenthood is unique,” she says. “Maybe you’re looking for a redemptive experience after a tough first birth, or maybe you’re planning for an induction because of a past loss. Whatever it is, I want to help you map out a plan that feels right for you.”
Addressing Birth Myths
One of the biggest misconceptions Laura wants to tackle? “That you can’t have an unmedicated, low-intervention birth in a hospital. With the right education, support, and team, it’s absolutely possible. I’ve helped so many families achieve it.”
Laura’s Top Tips for New and Expecting Parents
- Pregnancy: “See a pelvic floor physical therapist and a chiropractor during your pregnancy. If your pelvis is aligned, your baby will likely have an easier entry into the world!”
- Labor and Birth: “You have instincts—trust them. Let your intuition guide you through labor and your decisions. And remember, you’re in charge in the labor room. Learn how to make the most of that.”
- Postpartum: “Rest and nest. The six-week recovery timeline is bullsh*t. Look to how other cultures support postpartum families and give yourself the deep rest you need.”
