Gailyn Bound Death Doula: Supporting Families Through Life’s Final Chapter | Northern Colorado Birth Photographer

When Gailyn Bound’s mom was battling cancer, Gailyn stayed by her side every step of the way. That experience changed her life. It inspired her to become an End of Life Doula, someone who helps people and their families during the journey from life to death.

What Does an End of Life Doula Do?
Gailyn works with families in Lyons, Longmont, Boulder, and nearby areas. She creates a calm, comforting space for people nearing the end of their life while also supporting their loved ones emotionally.

Her goal is to make this difficult time as peaceful as possible. “Even in the last days, there can be moments of joy,” Gailyn says. “Those final connections with loved ones are truly special.”

A Personal Journey
Gailyn’s work comes from the heart. Caring for her mom gave her a deep understanding of what families need during this time. “Being there for someone at the end of their life feels like such an honor,” she shares. “It’s a privilege to offer comfort when it matters most.”

What Does an End of Life Doula Not Do?
A lot of people aren’t sure what a Death Doula does. One thing Gailyn often clears up is that she doesn’t assist with euthanasia. “I’m here to support people no matter what decisions they make, but I don’t provide euthanasia services,” she explains.

Another misconception is that doulas only help in the final days. Gailyn actually works with families much earlier, helping with end-of-life plans and offering support throughout the process. She also works alongside hospice care to create a peaceful experience.

Gailyn’s Advice for Caregivers
If you’re taking care of a loved one with a terminal illness, Gailyn recommends these simple ways to bring them comfort:

  • Create a soothing space: Use familiar items, soft lighting, and calming music.
  • Offer gentle touch: Holding their hand or rubbing their feet can bring peace.
  • Just be there: Sitting quietly with them shows they’re not alone.

Life Outside of Work
When Gailyn isn’t working with families, you’ll often find her hiking or skiing with her own loved ones. If she weren’t an End of Life Doula, she says she’d probably go back to teaching preschoolers—a job she loved for six years.
