If you’re planning to birth in Boulder or the surrounding areas, you’ve probably (hopefully!) heard about Sage Birth & Wellness Collective. It’s more than just a business—it’s a place where families are empowered, supported, and celebrated during some of the most life-changing moments they’ll ever experience.
Amy Meilen, Boulder doula and the heart and soul behind Sage Birth & Wellness, is a doula with a passion for helping families thrive. Based in Longmont, Amy and her team have been serving the Front Range since 2015, providing exceptional care that goes way beyond the basics.

A Life-Changing Journey to Becoming a Doula
“I birthed four babies and had doulas for the latter three,” Amy says. “It was a game changer for me to feel supported in making informed choices and to feel like I had autonomy in my body and birthing.”
Amy’s journey into birth work started with supporting a dear friend through her labor. What began as a one-time favor quickly turned into a calling. “I took a certification class with DONA thinking I’d only support my friend. But by the third day, I decided to make it my new career.”
She hasn’t looked back since. “I stay in birth work for many reasons, but mostly because I love helping families in their ‘becoming.’ It’s where I’m meant to be.”

What Sets Sage Birth & Wellness Apart?
At Sage Birth & Wellness, Amy offers more than just doula services. She also provides pelvic physical therapy for anyone with a uterus, a service many people don’t realize can lead to deep physical and emotional healing.
“People are often surprised by the women’s health portion of my job,” Amy shares. “The extent of healing that can happen through this work is incredible.”
One misconception she often addresses? “Doulas don’t perform cervical checks. While I have experience with internal work as a PT, it’s not within my scope as a doula.”
Instead, Amy focuses on empowering families with knowledge, tools, and unwavering support. “I love helping families understand physiological birth and seeing them thrive in postpartum. Education is one of my favorite parts of the job!”

Unforgettable Moments
Ask Amy about her favorite stories, and she’ll have plenty to share. “I’ll never forget the mom who gave birth in her car at a Denver gas station.”
Then there are the tender, intimate moments. “I once supported a couple who had lost their baby. Holding them in their grief and ensuring the birthing person felt seen, heard, and supported was one of the most profound experiences of my career.”
Every birth is unique, and Amy treasures the chance to be a part of each family’s story.

Top Tips from a Boulder Doula
If Amy could share just three tips with expecting families, they’d be:
- Wait for spontaneous labor. “Don’t succumb to the ‘seduction of induction.’ Ask your doula if induction is really necessary.”
- Keep moving during labor. “Movement supports your baby’s journey through the birth canal and can make things more comfortable and efficient.”
- Prioritize postpartum care. “Gift yourself 40 days of rest. Tend to yourself, your baby, and your partner. Postpartum care is essential for healing and overall wellness.”
