Are you thinking about having a home birth and wondering what it’s like to work with a midwife? I was curious too, especially since my babies were all born in the hospital.

In this post, I’m excited to share what I learned from Jodia Peters, a midwife who helps families have their babies at home in Northern Colorado. Jodia is very experienced and helps make home births safe and comfortable.

Getting Started with Home Birth

Jodia has been helping families with birth since January 2017. She started her own midwifery practice recently, and with nine children of her own and lots of birth experiences, she’s great at supporting families during home births.

“I wanted to help families have their babies in the way that makes them feel most comfortable. Home birth lets you choose what works best for you.” – Jodia

What Happens During a Home Birth

Jodia visits families at home for check-ups, which is really convenient if you have other kids! She also helps with things like finding childbirth classes and making sure car seats are installed correctly. So she’s basically your birthy BFF!

“Home births let you create a cozy and comfortable space for your baby’s arrival. Whether you want a birth pool or not, we can make things just right for you.” -Jodia

Common Misconceptions About Home Birth

I asked Jodia if she wants to set the record straight on some common myths about home birth, and these were her comments:

  1. “The cord around a baby’s neck is dangerous.” This is a common situation and usually doesn’t cause problems.
  2. “Home birth is riskier than hospital birth.” In many places, home births are common and safe. Jodia is prepared to handle any issues and will take you to the hospital if needed.

Making a Birth Plan

Jodia believes in getting to know her clients so she can help create a birth plan that fits their needs. She provides lots of information to help families make smart choices and feel ready for their birth.

“I want families to feel confident and prepared. I’ll support you and guide you through every step.” -Jodia

Jodia’s Top Tips for a Smooth Birth

  1. First Trimester: “I tell people it’s great to feel ‘wonderfully terrible’. If they feel sick most of the time that means everything is going well. Its not fun, but most of the time they will feel better in the second trimester.”
  2. Bond with Your Baby: “As their bodies are growing, they can be reminded their body is working hard at growing an entire human being. It’s a lot of work, and it’s a special time to get to know their baby and start to connect with them.”
  3. Rest After Birth: “Postpartum time can be challenging for some women who often keep themselves busy. If they can focus on resting and taking care of themselves for the first few weeks, they will feel better overall in the long run. The first 2 weeks after birth is a huge adjustment, hormones, lack of sleep, figuring out what a baby needs and wants, learning how to breastfeed, but after that it slowly becomes less of a drastic adjustment.”
