Hiring a birth photographer is an incredible way to preserve the once-in-a-lifetime moments of your baby’s birth. But before you book, it’s important to ask the right questions! Birth photography is unique—your photographer isn’t just showing up for a scheduled session; they’re on call, ready to drop everything when your baby decides it’s time.
So, what should you ask before hiring a birth photographer? Here are five must-ask questions (and my answers!) to help you find the perfect fit.

1. Do You Have Backups?
Birth is unpredictable—your birth photographer needs a solid plan in case of an emergency, scheduling conflict, or technical issue.
✅ Yes! I have a group of trusted birth photographers who back me up, and I do the same for them. If I’m sick, have an emergency, or am already at another birth, I’ll arrange for a backup photographer to be there to document your birth story. We’ll discuss who will be on call as your due date approaches, so you feel confident knowing you’ll be covered no matter what.
📸 I also have backup equipment. Cameras fail, batteries die, and memory cards can get corrupted—but I don’t take chances. I always bring extra gear, including a second camera, multiple lenses, extra batteries, and plenty of memory cards. That way, even if something unexpected happens, I can keep capturing your birth without missing a beat.

2. When Do I Call You When I’m in Labor?
Since every labor is different, it’s important to know when your birth photographer should head your way!
📞 Call me as soon as you think labor is starting! A quick heads-up allows me to prepare, even if it’s a false alarm. I typically arrive when you’re in active labor—when contractions are consistently 4-6 minutes apart and lasting about a minute each. But labor varies for everyone, so we’ll stay in close contact to time it right!

3. What Does Being On Call Mean?
Birth photographers don’t just show up on a set date—we’re on call 24/7 leading up to your due date.
📅 Being on call means that for weeks, my life revolves around your birth! Starting at 38 weeks, I keep my phone on loud at all times, my gear packed, and my schedule flexible. I stay close to home, have childcare lined up, and am ready to head to you the moment labor picks up.

4. Do You Use Flash?
Many birth spaces are dark, so photographers use different techniques to capture clear, high-quality images.
💡 Yes, I use flash in most birth situations, but I’m very intentional about it. My flash is never pointed directly at you or your baby—I bounce it off the ceiling or walls for a soft, natural look. Most people don’t even notice it! If it bothers you, just let me know, and I can adjust as needed.

5. Do You Share My Images?
Your birth photos are deeply personal, so privacy is important!
📸 Your images belong to YOU first and foremost. While I love showcasing the beauty of birth, it’s never required. We’ll discuss privacy preferences in your consultation and again after I deliver your images. You have full control over what, if anything, I share.

Bonus Tip: Ask Yourself How You Feel!
Birth photography is intimate, and you want to feel comfortable with your birth photographer in your space. Choose someone whose work you love, but also someone you trust and connect with!
